The World's Largest Tuned Mass Damper

I've been fascinated by these engineering wonders called mass dampers ever since reading about them in a Popular Science article about the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge.

Mass dampers are heavy masses hung as a pendulum within tall structures in order to reduce the swaying of these buildings/towers etc. They're an amazing example of just how cool physics is, at least to me!

Anyway, this link is to a 78 ton spherical mass damper within the Taipei 101 building. Check out the Youtube video of it in action!

Fascinating Flash Sites

Got broadband and some time to waste? Turn up the volume on your PC speakers and check out these amazing Flash websites. A lot of work has gone into the animation and coding of these work of art.

Surreal Music Video from the makers of Samorost web adventure games. I hate the music though. I was browsing through a Borders bookstore one day and someone kept playing these horrible Bjork-like 'music' through the store's PA system. Can't help but wonder how many potential customers was turned-off and left immediately.

Cute Japanese Doll Drummers...with bite!

A pseudo E-Commerce site that is actually a Rube Goldberg machine that accomplishes nothing but sure is entertaining!

Amazing animation of a poor guy just trying to get through a door.

Snippets From My Opera Notes

Opera is my default browser even though I also use Firefox 3 as a stand-by. One of the Opera features that I frequently rely on is the ability to store 'Post-It' like notes in the browser that is easily searchable.

As I do a housekeep of these accumulated notes, I decide to delete some of them even though I copied these from various sources on the Web merely because they're interesting to read. So here's the stuff, before they finally go into the Recycle Bin for good....

Two monks were once traveling together down a muddy road. A heavy rain was falling. Coming around the bend, they met a lovely girl in a silk kimono and sash, unable to cross the intersection.

“Come on, girl,” said the first monk. Lifting her in his arms, he carried her over the mud.

The second monk did not speak again until that night when they reached a lodging temple. Then he no longer could restrain himself.

“We monks don’t go near females,” he said. “It is dangerous. Why did you do that?”

“I left the girl there,” the first monk said. “Are you still carrying her?”

Jake is 5 and learning to read.

He points at a picture in a zoo book and says,
"Look Mama! It's a frickin' Elephant!"

Deep breath ... "What did you call it?"

"It's a frickin' Elephant, Mama! It says so on the picture!"

And so it does ...

"A f r i c a n Elephant"

Hooked on phonics!!! Ain't it wonderful?

One day my mother was out and my dad was in charge of me.

I was maybe 2 1/2 years old and had just recovered from an accident.

Someone had given me a little 'tea set' as a get-well gift and it was one of my favorite toys.

Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when I brought Daddy a little cup of "tea", which was just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my Mom came home.

My Dad made her wait in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of tea, because it was "just the cutest thing!" My Mom waited, and sure enough, I walked down the hall with a cup of tea for Daddy and she watched him drink it up.

Then she says, (as only a mother would know... :) "Did it ever occur to you that the only place that your daughter can reach to get water is the toilet?"

Why Do Men Have Breasts? (and nipples)

Because all human fetuses start out as androgynous initially and even before the sex was determined by the XY chromosomes, we all have breasts and nipples. That's why!

Now for the next question....Why are heterosexual men so attracted to female breasts?
